The term "Emergency Passport" was commonly used for a temporary document enabling a person to travel.

The current emergency travel document is not a passport but it will enable a British citizen to return to the UK if for example their passport is lost, damaged, expired or stolen while outside the UK.

This Emergency Passport or Emergency Travel Document (as referred to by HMPO) may also enable entry into other countries but will be dependent on Visa and other restriction, so check with any county you intend to visit before returning to the UK. To obtain a travel document in these circumstances, contact the Foreign and Commonwealth Office or local consulate in the country where your passport was lost.
